A guide to gluten free dining in New Orleans

June 20 2013 | What's New

For people on gluten free diets, dining out can be very challenging. Most restaurants don’t advertise gluten free items on their menus, so you run the risk of going somewhere that either doesn’t offer anything you can order, or does, but you don’t know about it.

That’s why we put together this list of places in New Orleans that’s gluten free friendly. Most of these items aren’t on the standard menu, so be sure to ask your waiter about them once you get seated.

Court of Two Sisters

Every day, Court of Two Sisters has a daily live jazz brunch buffet. Guests on gluten free diets can either ask their waiter what meets their requirements, or the chef will personally come out and walk them through the buffet line. For dinner, the chef can make almost any entrée gluten-free – just ask the waiter.

Oceana Grill

Oceana Grill provides a special menu for their gluten free guests. From Louisiana crabmeat cakes to grilled rib eye steak, the menu looks just as delicious as the standard one. We recommend the fresh gulf grilled redfish, served with vegetables and garlic potatoes.

Gordon Biersch

Gordon Biersch provides gluten free diners with a recommendation menu, featuring dishes that are either already gluten free, or instructions on how to order it so that the chef makes it gluten free. For example, the menu recommend ordering the seared tuna, but to “request no wasabi aioli and substitute with a suggested side item” from a list that includes apple cider slaw, jasmine rice, sautéed mushrooms and more.

Deanie’s Seafood

Deanie’s Seafood has gluten free options for every course – appetizers, salads, lunch, dinner and dessert. For appetizers, try the shrimp remoulade, broiled crawfish tails or raw oysters on the half shell. The salad menu is nothing to scoff at, with creole spinach salad, and our favorite, the “Bucktown Blues Salad,” which includes romaine leaves, spiced pecans, crumbled Danish Blue Cheese, and is topped off with their special sweet fig and balsamic vinaigrette.

For lunch and dinner, you’ll find catfish, oysters, steak, grilled chicken, redfish (prepared any way except fried) and burgers (sans the bun) – although not all are served at lunch AND dinner.

Top it off with a nectar soda float or an ice cream sundae, and you’ll wonder why eating gluten free ever had to be difficult.

Ralph & Kacoo's

Fresh grilled seafood is the name of the game at Ralph & Kacoos. Feel free to order gulf shrimp, cedar plank Salmon, Mahi Mahi, crabmeat, grilled chicken, catfish and lobster tails without feeling guilty. Some of their gluten free items also include:

“Mahi Mahi Bourbon Street,” which is grilled Mahi Mahi topped with sautéed shrimp

“Cedar Plank Salmon” – Fresh fillet, smoked on a cedar plank

“The Stacked Salad” – Your choice of baby gulf shrimp or jumbo lump crab meat stacked with diced tomato and avocado over a bed of Romaine lettuce

“Certified Angus Beef Steaks” – Includes a 14 oz. rib eye, a 12 oz. New York strip, a 9 oz. filet mignon, and a 14 oz. rib-eye with lobster tails.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

Do you have a child on a gluten free diet? Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. serves a kid-sized grilled shrimp dish with jasmine rice, jello and fruit.

For bigger people, there’s the “Accidental Fish & Shrimp,” which is basically broiled Mahi Mahi over jasmine rice, topped with grilled shrimp, a lemon butter sauce and Roma tomatoes. They also have shrimp and veggie skewers, and a salmon and veggie skillet – both well worth trying.

Tujaque’s Restaurant also serves gluten free dishes, so ask the waiters what options they have available when you’re ready to start ordering.
