Woo hoo! Lunch at SoBou!

SoBou, short for "south of Bourbon," is a member of the Commander's Family of Restaurants. In case you’re not from this planet, that means “you can’t go wrong.”

Chef Juan Carlos Gonzalez’s playful menu makes it a great place to stop when you’re out for an afternoon of fun in the Vieux Carré. About Travel named it one of the "10 Best Lunch Restaurants in the French Quarter." We’d have to agree.

We started our lunch with cocktails (best part of this job). I had the Sunset in the Courtyard made with tequila, blood orange liqueur, citrus, and house made pomegranate syrup. It came with a cute pair of SoBou sunglasses. My companion ordered a Honey Buzz Milk Punch, a creative concoction comprised of Honey Nut Cheerio infused rum, honey syrup, holiday pie bitters and milk. I didn’t see any bees fluttering about her head but I’m pretty sure it came with a buzz, as the name implies.

Our culinary adventure continued with the Sweet Potato Beignets with foie gras fondue and chicory coffee granache. Who can turn down a beignet in any form? Not us. Then, I went for the 24-hour smoked Couchon de Lait Cuban Sandwich with gruyere cheese, Creole mustard and bread and butter pickles. I love a sandwich with great bread and this did not disappoint. While it, like Mary Poppins, was “practically perfect in every way,” I have to admit I was a little envious of my friend’s Foie Gras Burger which was delivered to her on a brioche bun with a sunny-side up egg, duck bacon and foie gras fondue. It came with a little foie gras ice cream root beer float which was adorable, not to mention yummy (I stole a sip). Eater New Orleans named it one of "New Orleans 10 Best Fine Dining Burgers." No surprise there.

While my friend was satisfied after the root beer float and was willing to forgo dessert, I insisted I needed a dessert pic for this review. While I have a hard time passing up anything named Chocolate Coma Bar, I went for the Cherries Jubilee & White Chocolate Bread Pudding with house made vanilla bean ice cream. You have to wait 25 minutes for this treat, but it’s worth it.

So will we be coming back to SoBou? You bet. For one thing, I need a Foie Gras Burger of my own! For another, there’s a lot left on this menu to explore. Check out our restaurant overview here or visit sobounola.com.
