Vegetarianism in the Big Easy
By: Marica Mackenroth
Being a vegetarian for over 8 years, I have had time to learn the “ins” and the “outs” of dining meatless in the Big Easy.
Some may think this is quite a feat, impossible even, but this is not the case. In fact, having traveled, I find that living in New Orleans actually helps with vegetarian options.
As much of my breakfasts, lunches and dinners come along with sauces, stews and the like, having a plethora of ethnic cuisine options and a citywide openness to spices is a treat. Who’s to say that I can’t like spicy or different food as a vegetarian? Surely, not I.
Old New Orleans favorites such as red beans, cornbread, biscuits and creole tomatoes are a simple and craved addition to my diet, as well as the numerous amount of tapas being served throughout the city. I have found that no matter the price, location or style the menu – I have always been able to find an option. And for all of the vegetarians out there – have no fear, you can always request the vegetarian option even if it is not on the menu.
Some restaurants jump at the chance to serve a vegetarian. Pricier restaurants, on occasion, have sent out veggie appetizers just for me to sample. (Try not to expect this, however).
The biggest hurdle would be seafood. There is often a confusion that all vegetarians eat fish, crawfish, crabs, etc, which simply isn’t the case. Because of the confusion, there are usually less options at seafood restaurants, forcing the vegetarians to eat a baked potato or steamed vegetables.
Regardless, even the appetizers in New Orleans are known for being savory in delicious, so veggie lovers should never be left out of an option. Calling ahead always works, though reputable dining establishments should deam it unnecessary.
So if you have ever thought about cutting meat out of your diet, you are now left with one less excuse. Crescent city food can be a whole new adventure.
