Restaurant Review: Ralph & Kacoo's

Ralph & Kacoo'sIn the French Quarter, not far from Bourbon Street, is Ralph & Kacoo's. In the heart of the French Quarter, it’s in the ideal location for a quick bite to eat for tourists between shopping and sight seeing, but plenty of locals frequent this place as well.

It bills itself as a seafood restaurant, and there are plenty of seafood items on the menu, but you can also order steak, salads, po-boys and enjoy a full service bar as well.

Ralph & Kacoo'sAtmosphere

The first thing you will notice when walking through the front doors is that this place is big. With multiple dining areas and an oyster bar, there is plenty of room for large groups and private parties.

The main dining room features dueling pianos – baby grands – which start at 7 p.m. The décor is playful and emphasizes their seafood specialty without being over the top of cheesy. Although, they did have this guy on the right (which, for the record, we love).

Appetizers

Ralph & Kacoo's appetizerIf you can only order two things, these are the two you should ask for: Crawfish nachos and lobster mac & cheese.

Yes, we know – the mac and cheese is really more like a side dish, but they are both so good that they deserve some special recognition. The lobster mac & cheese tasted like the kind your grandmother would make, except with seafood and a kick. One order is pretty large, so it’s perfect for group sharing.  The crawfish nachos are a little messy, but they’re nachos, so that’s to be expected. The combination of the crawfish, cheese, salty chips and sour cream was perfect.

Diners also get complimentary hushpuppies. Lightly fried, cake-like and delicious, they set the tone for the meal ahead.

Since we went at lunch, the waiter gave us a special menu, although they were happy to make anything from the dinner menu as well.

The Chicken Ca-Jun Blue was one of the lunch menu selections. Essentially, it is baked chicken covered in crawfish with a cream sauce. Vegetables were the automatic side, but if you’re craving something heavier, then you can substitute those with a Cajun baked potato (or, as many people know it, a twice baked potato).

The Po-Boys were authentic, came served on crispy french bread with heaping portions of meat. If you're looking for something a little adventurous try their alligator po-boy. It's like chicken, but spicy!

One thing is for certain: they don’t kid around with dessert. The portions are huge and can be easily shared. We ordered the bread pudding, and it came topped with blue berries, which was a nice touch. We also ordered the cheesecake. The extra large portion came drizzled with strawberries and was delicious.

All in all, if you like seafood and steak joints, then you should like this place.
