Opera at Cafe Giovanni

Posted on: January 9 2013 | Posted in: Restaurants

Cafe Giovanni LogoThe only thing that pairs better with Italian food than wine is music. Chef Duke LoCicero and his staff know this better than anyone else in the city which is why they offer opera as entertainment at Cafe Giovanni.  Each Thursday night diners are delighted and entertained by the Cafe Giovanni Singers, a small group of dedicated opera singers. Lead by Kyle Jones, the singers entertain the diners' eyes and ears while Chef Duke and his kitchen staff please palates.

The tradition of opera at Cafe Giovanni is almost as old as the restaurant itself.  Just two short years after the restaurant opened 21 years ago, Chef Duke decided that he wanted to give diners more than just great meals. He wanted to give them the full dining experience. At first he had the waiters sing, but as the restaurant got busier and demands grew, professional opera singers were brought in to charm guests.

While the opera night at Cafe Giovanni is something to be experienced, Chef Duke's menus are legendary as well.  Cafe Giovanni has won many local and national awards for Chef Duke's cooking prowess. Just recently Chef Duke was named the 2011 Louisiana Chef of the Year (his second time receiving this honor).

Among the most popular dishes on the menu is the venerable spaghetti and meatballs. It's based on an old Sicilian recipe from Chef Duke's grandmother and features a special marinara sauce with a large delicious handmade meatball.  The Oysters Giovanni are also a crowd pleaser. This appetizer features delicately fried oysters atop a beautiful canvas of five different sauces from Chef Duke's culinary arsenal. Finally, what's dinner without dessert? The tiramisu at Cafe Giovanni is a must-have. Delicate lady fingers dipped in espresso sit nestled between layers of cream and cocoa. Truly, it's a dish not to miss.

Check out Cafe Giovanni on a Thursday for dinner and the opera show or any other night of the week for great food and drink sans opera. If the opera at Cafe Giovanni leaves you wanting more, check out New Orleans' local opera and broadway scene at NewOrleansBroadway.com.
