The Old Absinthe House Bar
Directly next door to Jean Lafitte's Bistro is a New Orleans classic - the Old Absinthe House Bar. For almost 200 years, the Old Absinthe House Bar has been a staple of life in the Vieux Carre. Built in 1807, the building was originally used as something of a corner grocery, where goods were bought, sold and traded. Seven years later the front corner room became a saloon known as "Aleix's Coffee House". Perhaps the most momentous occurrence was the creation of the Absinthe Frappe by bartender Cayetano Ferrer in 1874. The popularity of this potent potable resulted in renaming the coffee house to the "Absinthe Room", and thus a legend was born!
Over the years, the Old Absinthe House has flourished into one of New Orleans most prominent and popular taverns. You will find the jerseys and helmets of many famous football legends suspended from the ceiling or adorning the walls. Each year millions of visitors stop by to have an Absinthe House Frappe or perhaps a Sazerac or Ramos Gin Fizz, or any number of the great concoctions that our bartenders have perfected. And of course no trip to the Old Absinthe House is complete until you place your calling card up on the wall with the millions of others who have given testimony to the adage:
"Everyone you have known or ever will know, eventually ends up at the Old Absinthe House !"
