Hard Rock Cafe's Satchmo Room
Located along the Mississippi River in the French Quarter, the Satchmo Room sits atop the old Jax Brewery warehouse. Behind the warehouse was an old bar where some of the first blues music was played in New Orleans. Unfortunately, little information about this “music shack” exists. In celebration of our location's New Orleans' rich music history, the Satchmo Room on top of the Hard Rock Cafe was created. |
|
The original warehouse was built in 1867, mostly to store liquor. During Prohibition, most of the warehouses were shut down or gave the outside appearance of being closed. In 1987, Hard Rock Cafe restored the historic property to regain the elegant history of Decatur Street.
The room is the proud owner of the only Louis Armstrong Trumpet in the state of Louisiana. The Satchmo Room not only contains Armstrong's Trumpet that he played in New Orleans, but also memorabilia from the Neville Brothers, Professor Long Hair, and Fats Domino. The room is a tribute to blues & jazz and to all of Louisiana's music from brass bands to zydeco. Clifton Chenier's accordion, Doug Kershaw's fiddle and the original drumhead from Olympia Brass Band are among the items to view.
Come in and get a history lesson on New Orleans music and watch an educational and entertaining video created by Louisiana's own Music Commissioner, Bernie Cyrus. The 20-minute video will take you on a personal trip through the New Orleans music scene. Informational fun sheets will be provided. Experience a taste of New Orleans music in the Satchmo Room on top of the Hard Rock Cafe. Even though we cannot blow our own horn because it is attached to the wall, we're sure you can imagine the sweet sounds that Satchmo's prized possession once created.
“If it hadn't been for Jazz, there wouldn't be no rock and roll.”
