The City of Gretna will honor its most famous son, Mel Ott, with the dedication of a life-sized bronze statue in the heart of downtown historic Gretna, in the month he would have celebrated his 100th Birthday. Ott leaped to fame in 1926 after leaving high school baseball at age sixteen and joining the New York Giants, making him the youngest ever to become a major leaguer. He remained with the New York Giants his entire 22-season career.
In 1951, he was named to baseball’s “Hall of Fame” in Cooperstown, New York, for his many record-breaking accomplishments. He is best known for his unusual batting stance and 511 home runs, the National League record when he retired in 1948. He tallied a .304 lifetime batting average, played in eleven All-Star Games and three World Series. Baseball historians consistently note his gentle demeanor and politeness.

Why spend this weekend at home with a good book, when the weather's perfect for getting outside? Here's a way to do both. The Old Mandeville Jane Austen Festival kicks off this weekend for its second year in a row, and has a surprisingly extensive schedule of events and offerings, all designed to transform Old Mandeville into a Regency Era-inspired celebration of the revered novelist.
At top billing in the festival is the Perfect Love Letter Writing Contest readings and awards, during which wordsmiths and letter-lovers who have penned their prosaic professions of love read their winning letters. And for inspired youngsters, New Orleans teacher and poet Gina Ferrara will conduct a free letter writing workshop for youngsters in the Depot Building on Saturday at 9 am.
But the festival branches far beyond letter-writing. A few of the activities on Saturday, March 7, include a community market in old English attire (9 am), a "Meet Jane Austen" lecture and panel discussion (1... Contact Info : (985) 624-5683 or www.janeaustenfestival.org

The historic bar from Bruning’s Restaurant, which managed to survive the devastation of both Hurricanes Georges and Katrina, has found a new home at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum.
The bar, which spent time in the waters of Lake Pontchartrain following Hurricane Katrina, has been damaged but not severely. It is the intent of the museum to restore the bar and display it as a shrine to local culinary culture.
The 16-foot bar was constructed of numerous types of wood and has faux marble colonettes. It also features numerous mirrors though the original large mirror was lost in the hurricane and its aftermath.
The bar was created between 1859 and 1871 by Brunswick Manufacturing, the Chicago-based company that today makes pool tables and bowling balls. The bar has been photographed for numerous publications including Obituary Cocktail by Kerri McCaffety.
