The 45th annual New Orleans Mardi Gras Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, February 1st and begins at 7 a.m. in front of the Superdome. They are expecting over 5,000 runners and walkers from all 50 states as well as 14 foreign countries.
The marathon and half-marathon will start in front of the Superdome and our course travels through the French Quarter (from Canal up Bourbon Street to Dumaine, over to Royal and back toward Canal), onto St. Charles Avenue to Audubon Park and then on towards City Park.

The Spanish Custom House in the Bayou St. John neighborhood will soon be auctioned.
Neal Auction says the property will be sold Feb. 10. The auction house calls it one of the oldest and most historic buildings in New Orleans and one of the few surviving residences from the Spanish colonial period in the South.
Built it 1784, the house is the oldest structure still standing in the Bayou St. John neighborhood, Neal Auction said.
The home escaped the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina and has never flooded, Neal Auction said.

The Mystick Krewe of Shangri-LA announced Community Activists Murray & Gerri Valene as their 2009 Grand Marshall for their Stroll through the French Quarter. The Vespa Cycle Group will ride in formation at the beginning of the Stroll followed by the Warren Easton High School Band leading the numerous horse drawn carriages and the other members of the stroll including Angela Hill (Grand Marshall 2008) as a VIP rider.

The theme for this year’s submissions is The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies. The state competition will be held at The National World War II Museum in New Orleans on Saturday, May 2, 2009. Students that qualify on a state level will then compete in National History Day in College Park, MD on June 14 – 19, 2009.

Don't miss the Skeleton Krewe during Carnival season 2009.
The Skeleton Krewe will be leading Krewe d'Etat down their new
extended parade route on Friday February 20. Find the Skeleton Krewe
to receive the D'Etat Gazette, a bulletin with pictures and
descriptions of the floats, and/or Krewe d'Etat wooden nickel. The
extended Krewe d'Etat route begins at Jefferson and Magazine and
continues down to Magazine and joins the traditional Uptown route at
Napoleon behind Hermes with Morpheus to follow Krewe d'Etat.

Level 1 Trauma Center Gives Back to the Community During Mardi Gras
Medical Services Available at 1927 Tulane Avenue
Emergency Department overload is a
major problem for the already full emergency departments (EDs) in all
of the hospitals during Mardi Gras in the greater New Orleans area.
Most of the patients coming into the EDs have only minor complaints
but will occupy bed space and take the time of patient care providers.
To relieve this problem during the 2009 Mardi Gras weekend and on
Mardi Gras day and to make the best use of ED space and personnel for
sicker patients and trauma patients, the Interim LSU Public Hospital
Level 1 Trauma Center has taken a lead on providing care for the Mardi
Gras Temporary Urgent Care Center (MGTUCC).
The Trauma Center will facilitate the urgent care center by handling
minor medical and trauma emergencies at its tent location at 1927
Tulane Avenue.

On Mardi Gras morning, February 24, Big Queen Cherice Harrison Nelson will lead the Guardians of the Flame Cultural Arts Collective, a new all-female group that includes women from the Mardi Gras tradition and the local African dance community.
In addition, special participants will include Nigerian Elder Phanuel Egejuru, Achebe's biographer and former Loyola English professor; Sula, a member of Zion Trinity and a Medicine Woman who, in her role as a doula, assists with births and deaths so that participants enter and exit the world in a culturally connected manner; Jamilah Muhammed, who will serve as the Big Queen's Royal dancer, a position given to her by the late Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr.; and Wild Woman Kahina, wearing an African hat/crown headpiece, who will mask in a traditional male role, a notion embraced by Big Chief Donald.

In what has quickly become a popular family Mardi Gras Day tradition in Jefferson Parish, the 3rd Annual Mask-N-Mambo Costume Contest will be held, in coordination with Jefferson Parish and Family Gras, at 9 a.m. on February 24. The Mask-N-Mambo Costume Contest will take place on the stage across from the Jefferson Parish Toasting Stand at Causeway and Veterans. The contest is free and open to all ages.
The Mask-N-Mambo Costume Contest was created to help bring back the family tradition of dressing up or “masking” for Mardi Gras Day. Contestants are judged and prizes are awarded to the winners of each of four categories – Individual, Group, Family and Children (ages 0-12). Level 1 Trauma Center Gives Back to the Community During Mardi Gras

Emergency Department overload is a
major problem for the already full emergency departments (EDs) in all
of the hospitals during Mardi Gras in the greater New Orleans area.
Most of the patients coming into the EDs have only minor complaints
but will occupy bed space and take the time of patient care providers.
To relieve this problem during the 2009 Mardi Gras weekend and on
Mardi Gras day and to make the best use of ED space and personnel for
sicker patients and trauma patients, the Interim LSU Public Hospital
Level 1 Trauma Center has taken a lead on providing care for the Mardi
Gras Temporary Urgent Care Center (MGTUCC).
The Trauma Center will facilitate the urgent care center by handling
minor medical and trauma emergencies at its tent location at 1927
Tulane Avenue.

Calling all students: National History Day competition offers opportunities to learn from the past
For the first time since 2004, Louisiana students will join those in 48 other states, and the District of Columbia, in participating in National History Day. The theme for this year’s submissions is The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies. The state competition will be held at The National World War II Museum in New Orleans on Saturday, May 2, 2009. Students that qualify on a state level will then compete in National History Day in College Park, MD on June 14 – 19, 2009.
National History Day, which began in 1974, is the nation’s leading educational program for history education in the schools. The Arts Market of New Orleans will begin at noon and go until 6 pm due to the possibility of rain in the morning. Mama Saba, The African Storyteller will perform at 4:00 pm in the Kids Tent and the Brazilian Capoeira demonstration with drumming by Grupo Maculele will take place at 5 pm.
