My New Orleans Is...Its African American Heritage

The Pirate's Alley Faulkner Society hosts this exploration of the historic Tremé and the cultural contributions made by African Americans to one of the city's most colorful neighborhoods. Included is the screening of Faubourg Tremé: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans. Free and open to the public. Writer and Co-producer, Lolis Eric Elie will be in attendance. On Thursday, February 28th, at 7pm, the Louisiana Humanities Center’s Documentary Film Series continues with “Reconstructing Creole,” a film by Jennifer John Block.



Winner of the 2007 LEH Documentary Film of the Year Award, “Reconstructing Creole” explores Louisiana’s cultural legacy through the vivid memoir of a 19th century plantation mistress and the eventful restoration of her old plantation manor (Laura Plantation on the River Road).



First aired on PBS in January 2007, the film also won Best Documentary Feature at the Hollywood DV Festival in April 2007, as well as the 2007 Award of Merit from the American Association of State and Local History.


Jennifer will be on hand for a Q&A and short reception following the film. Doors open at 7pm at the Louisiana Humanities Center, 938 Lafayette Street, in the CBD. Tickets are $5, free for students and LEH members.
