A Short History

Cafe Pontalba is located at Jackson Square in the heart of the French Quarter in The Pontalba Apartments. The apartments, built by Micaela, daughter of Don Andreas Almonester y Roxas, opened in 1851 and were hailed as the first large-scale apartment buildings in the United States.

Originally, each building contained sixteen apartments with thick walls, deep doors and windows, splendid imported chandeliers, unusually fine marble fireplaces and furniture of the rosewood. Designed by the distinguished James Gallier, they show the Renaissance style adapted to the Creole locale.
